This book is wild

-ly entertaining.

And it has a great cover.

Rupert Holmes, the accomplished Broadway writer’s first foray into crime fiction is a fantastic book. (He also wrote the Pina Colada Song.)

This book follows three students of the McMaster School of Homicide; a school dedicated to teaching the art of deletion. (They don’t like saying murder.)

Told from the POV of the Dean of the school and journal entries from one of the students, we get two funny character voices that go over everything from how to properly poison a drink to the correct way to complete a murder in an operating room.

We follow our three students as they think about homicide, plan their homicide, hone the skills needed for it and ultimately try and make their plans a reality.

For a book all about murder, this is filled with joy, humour and heart. They talk about murder in a light-hearted way. The murders have stakes but they all need to be morally justified or you can’t graduate.

In what I hope turns into a series, the setup of this book is fantastic. We learn the characters’ goals slowly. As we start to understand why they are at the mysterious school, we start to sympathize with them. And by the end, actively cheering on their murderous intentions.

The characters are memorable and the school is an amazing setting. The humour is spot on. But the plotting is what stood out most.

Every character in this has a plan. From the teachers and staff to the characters and their targets. Everyone has secrets.

And the author does a fantastic job of obscuring them, hiding them and weaving them throughout the book.

Towards the end of the book, it felt like every chapter had an ‘ah-ha’ moment.

It was fun.

That’s the word that really comes to mind with this book.

Fun.

I hope you enjoyed my review of Murder Your Employer. Please let me know if you’ve read it, and what you think. Or if you may be tempted to learn more about the dark arts of homicide at McMasters…
